Nigeria will be represented by a one-man contingent at the opening ceremony of the Milano–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Italy, with cross-country skier Samuel Ikpefan carrying the nation’s hopes on the global stage.

Ikpefan, 34, is Nigeria’s sole athlete at the Winter Games and will compete in the men’s 10-kilometre freestyle and sprint classic events, marking another historic outing for the country in winter sports.

The Nigerian skier is scheduled to begin his campaign on Wednesday, February 13, when he takes part in the men’s 10km interval start free event.

Ikpefan’s participation underscores Nigeria’s growing presence in winter sports despite the country’s tropical climate, reinforcing its commitment to broadening its Olympic footprint beyond traditional disciplines.
