The Ogun East Independent Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Saturday, paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, former First Lady of Ogun State and wife of the state’s first civilian Governor, the late Chief Bisi Onabanjo.
The delegation, led by the Secretary of the Chapel, Comrade Funmilayo Adewoju Suleodu, conveyed the heartfelt sympathy of the union to the bereaved family, describing the passage of Mama Onabanjo as a painful loss not only to her family but to Ogun State at large.
Members of the Chapel eulogised the late Chief Mrs. Onabanjo as a woman of grace, humility and quiet strength, who played a dignified and supportive role during her husband’s historic tenure as governor. They noted that her life was defined by strong family values, service to humanity and moral integrity, virtues that endeared her to many within and beyond the state.
Prayers were offered for the peaceful repose of her soul, while the family was urged to take solace in the enduring legacy of love, service and honour she left behind. The Chapel also prayed for divine comfort and strength for the family in this moment of grief.
On behalf of the Executive and entire members of the Ogun East Independent Chapel, appreciation was extended to members who participated in the visit, commending their solidarity, compassion and unity.
Similarly, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun East Council, on behalf of the NUJ Ogun State Council, reiterated its heartfelt condolences to the Onabanjo family, acknowledging the remarkable life of Mama Onabanjo as a teacher, former First Lady and respected community figure whose impact touched many lives.
The union also recalled with pride the enduring contributions of her late husband, Chief Bisi Onabanjo, to the growth of journalism and media practice in Ogun State. His administration, the NUJ noted, was widely regarded for its openness to the press and respect for journalistic independence, which fostered an enabling environment for the media to thrive during a formative period in the state’s history.
The NUJ concluded by praying that Almighty God grants the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss and that the gentle soul of Mama Onabanjo rests in perfect peace.
