The Minority Leader of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Lukman Adeleye, has called for stronger legislative independence and greater attention to resolutions passed by the Assembly, urging the executive arm to prioritise laws and decisions awaiting assent.
Adeleye, who represents Odogbolu State Constituency, made the call during a special plenary session held at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, to mark the second anniversary of the leadership of the 10th Legislature under the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide.
He stressed that effective governance requires timely action on Assembly resolutions and bills, particularly those of public interest.
“The executive must always look into resolutions and laws passed by the Assembly that are awaiting the governor’s assent. Time must be created to attend to all these important documents of public interest,” Adeleye said.
The opposition leader urged Speaker Elemide to continue safeguarding the autonomy of the legislature, warning against reducing the Assembly to a “rubber stamp” of the executive. According to him, democratic governance thrives on mutual respect and strict adherence to the principles of separation of powers.
Adeleye noted that the anniversary was not only a celebration of leadership change but also a reflection of the Assembly’s growth, unity and resilience over the past two years. He reaffirmed the commitment of lawmakers to delivering quality legislation in the interest of Ogun State residents.
Lawmakers from across party lines commended Speaker Elemide for what they described as his inclusive, transparent and unifying leadership style, pledging continued support for the House under his stewardship.
In her remarks, the Deputy Speaker and member representing Yewa South State Constituency, Hon. Bolanle Lateefat Ajayi, praised lawmakers for their unity of purpose and credited the Speaker with fostering harmony within the Assembly.
Ajayi also acknowledged the support of Governor Dapo Abiodun for the legislative arm, noting that cooperation between the executive and legislature had contributed to stability in governance across the state.
Congratulating the Speaker on the milestone, Adeleye urged members of the House to sustain the current legislative momentum and remain focused on their constitutional responsibilities to the people of Ogun State.
