Atiku’s Son, Abba, Joins APC, Backs Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Bid

Abba Atiku, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has formally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that President Bola Tinubu is unbeatable in the 2027 presidential election.

Abba picked up his APC membership card on Monday at Gwadabwa Ward in Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, where he publicly pledged his support for Tinubu’s re-election. His move follows his earlier announcement on January 15, when he defected to the APC in Abuja.

Speaking after his registration, Abba said his decision was informed by what he described as strong economic reforms and people-focused governance under the Tinubu administration. He insisted that the President’s performance had earned him nationwide acceptance.

“I want to make it very clear: nobody or any political party can stop President Bola Tinubu from returning to Aso Rock in 2027,” he said. “Nigerians have seen his good work. He is not a tribalist, and he does not make appointments based on religion or region. His decisions are based on merit.”

Abba added that he was impressed by what he termed massive investments in infrastructure and human capital development across the country, urging Nigerians to support the President beyond party affiliations.

Presenting him with his membership card, the APC Zonal Vice Chairman for Adamawa Central, Alhaji Isa Bagalti, described the defection as a major boost for the ruling party ahead of 2027.

“With this development, it is now clear that there is no political party or candidate that can confront President Tinubu in the next election,” Bagalti said.

Echoing the sentiment, APC chieftain in Adamawa State, Alhaji Jamilu Yusuf, said Tinubu had no serious rival, dismissing other potential aspirants as “wishful thinkers.”

Abba’s defection adds a striking twist to Adamawa politics, given that his father, Atiku Abubakar, remains a presidential hopeful under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Another of Atiku’s sons, Adamu Atiku, is still a leading figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and currently serves as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State.

Earlier in January, Abba was formally received into the APC at the National Assembly by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside key party leaders from the North-East. At the event, Abba pledged to work closely with Senator Barau to secure Tinubu’s second-term bid and directed members of his political association to align with the APC.

Reacting to the development, Atiku Abubakar described his son’s defection as a personal decision, stressing that political choices should not be forced.

“In a democracy, such decisions are neither unusual nor alarming,” Atiku said. “As a democrat, I do not coerce my children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.”

Abba’s move is seen as both symbolic and politically significant, as the APC continues to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
