Ogun Moves to Rehabilitate OPIC Agbara Roads, Unveils Public–Private Funding Model

In a strategic push to strengthen industrial productivity and ease of doing business, the Ogun State Government has announced plans to commence comprehensive rehabilitation of roads and drainage systems within OPIC’s Agbara Industrial and Residential Estates.

The initiative was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing and Managing Director of the Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation (OPIC), Arc. Abiodun Fari-Arole, during a stakeholders’ meeting with industrialists operating within the Agbara estate, held in Abeokuta.

Fari-Arole explained that the engagement was convened to address the deteriorating condition of key roads within the estate, stressing that improved infrastructure was essential to sustaining Agbara’s reputation as a hub of industrial excellence and boosting Ogun State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

“Agbara is a hub that contributes immensely to employment, innovation and national development. Our success depends heavily on the strength of our infrastructure,” he said.

He warned that poor road conditions negatively impact logistics, raise operational costs and reduce efficiency, noting that failure to act could undermine the competitiveness of the industrial estate.

To deliver the project, the OPIC boss revealed a collaborative funding framework under which the state government would shoulder 60 per cent of the cost, while industries within the estate would contribute the remaining 40 per cent. He added that OPIC would establish a joint committee to drive the project, alongside a transparent procurement process and a dedicated project management unit to oversee day-to-day execution in line with agreed guidelines.

Fari-Arole also cautioned industries against discharging waste into public drainage channels, warning that such practices could trigger environmental hazards and unforeseen public health crises.

During the meeting, the Director of Planning, Survey and Research, TPL Dotun Akinwale, presented the list of roads slated for rehabilitation, including sections of service roads, Area 4 and 8 industrial roads, and mixed-use roads. He said the intervention would further unlock economic growth and improve access within the estate.

In his contribution, a representative of African Fertilizer Nigeria Limited, Mr. Navneet Chaudhary, appealed to the state government to provide a designated trailer park for heavy-duty trucks operating in the area. He noted that the facility would ease congestion, protect the rehabilitated roads from premature damage, and ensure their long-term durability.

The proposed road rehabilitation project is expected to significantly enhance logistics efficiency, attract further investment, and reinforce Agbara’s status as one of Nigeria’s leading industrial corridors.
