Former President Olusegun Obasanjo reportedly met privately with former military ruler General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (Retd.) on Monday at Babangida’s residence in Minna, Niger State, in a discreet engagement that has fueled speculation about political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to Politics Nigeria, Obasanjo arrived in Minna and went straight to the Hilltop residence of Babangida, with the meeting strictly closed to the public. No aides spoke to journalists, and neither camp issued any official statement. The brief discussion ended without any public interaction, after which Obasanjo departed Minna the same way he arrived.
The timing of the meeting has drawn attention as political activities linked to the 2027 presidential elections gain momentum. Sources indicate that Obasanjo has recently been involved in consultations aimed at building a united opposition front, with discussions reportedly including key political figures from across Nigeria.
Speculation in political circles suggests that a potential joint presidential ticket involving Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), could be part of broader opposition strategies. If such an arrangement materializes, it may influence the contest for the ADC ticket and reshape the opposition landscape ahead of the elections.
Babangida, similarly, has been mentioned in reports linking him to behind-the-scenes political consultations and possible realignments within opposition parties.
While the purpose of the Minna meeting remains undisclosed, the silence from both Obasanjo and Babangida has intensified public curiosity, leaving observers closely watching for signals of emerging alliances or strategic moves in the lead-up to 2027.
