Ogun State Launches Traffic Re-Engineering to Improve Road Safety and Flow

The Ogun State Ministry of Transportation has rolled out a comprehensive traffic re-engineering exercise across major roads in the state, aimed at enhancing road safety and improving the free flow of traffic, particularly at high-traffic corridors, critical intersections, and U-turns.

The intervention, which spans urban areas and highways in Lafenwa, Abeokuta, Sango-Ota, and Sagamu, includes the installation of new traffic signs, the marking of zebra crossings, and the maintenance of traffic light systems. Key locations such as the Lafenwa U-turn near First Bank, Brewery Junction, Sagamu Interchange, and Express Junction have already received upgraded traffic control infrastructure.

Speaking during an inspection, the Director of Transport Engineering, Engr. Hassan Ibrahim, representing the Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Olugbenga Dairo, emphasized that the initiative is part of broader efforts to promote discipline and adherence to modern traffic engineering standards across the state.

“The exercise aims to improve the visibility, standardisation, and effectiveness of traffic control devices across Ogun State,” Ibrahim said. “Motorists, pedestrians, and all road users must obey traffic signs and signals, as compliance is critical to protecting lives and property.”

The director also highlighted that routine maintenance and rehabilitation of traffic lights had been carried out at key junctions, including Iyana Mortuary and Sapon, to ensure optimal performance. He described road signs and traffic lights as essential infrastructure that reduces congestion, facilitates smooth movement, and significantly minimizes road traffic crashes.

Ibrahim called on residents to cooperate with traffic authorities, stressing that a collective effort is key to achieving a safe and reliable transportation system in Ogun State.

This initiative is expected to ease congestion, reduce accidents, and bring greater efficiency to the state’s road networks, while promoting discipline among motorists and pedestrians alike.
