ABIODUN, ADEOLA MOURN MAMA ONABANJO, HAIL LATE EX-FIRST LADY’S LEGACY AT 101

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has described the death of Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, wife of former Ogun State Governor, late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, as the end of a glorious and impactful era in the state’s political and social history.

Mama Onabanjo passed away on Monday, January 12, at the age of 101.

In a condolence statement issued on Tuesday in Abeokuta by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, Governor Abiodun said the late matriarch lived an exemplary, fulfilled, and distinguished life devoted to God, family, and humanity.

While acknowledging the pain that comes with the loss of a mother at any age, the Governor noted that Mama Onabanjo’s longevity and legacy made her transition one worthy of celebration rather than mourning alone.

He said Mama Onabanjo stood firmly beside her husband during his historic struggles for democracy, human rights, and social justice, adding that her life was inseparable from the values and ideals that defined Chief Olabisi Onabanjo’s public service.

“After a glorious epoch in which she joined her husband, our Papa, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, in the fight for democracy, the delivery of its dividends on a massive scale, and the advancement of human rights and social justice, Mama has now been reunited with Papa in glory,” the Governor said.

Governor Abiodun described the late Mama Onabanjo as a source of joy, warmth, prayers, and wise counsel, noting that she raised a lineage of highly accomplished children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who continue to make meaningful contributions to society.

“We bless the Lord for her long and fulfilled life, her legacy of love, strength, deep faith, and commitment to development,” he added, praying for God’s comfort for the Onabanjo family and all those affected by the loss.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Solomon Adeola (APC, Ogun West), has also expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the former First Lady of Ogun State, describing her as a model of virtue and a pillar of family stability.

In a condolence message issued through his media aide, Chief Kayode Odunaro, Senator Adeola said Mama Onabanjo lived a remarkably fulfilled life that reflected the grace and goodness of God.

He described her as a pioneering First Lady in Ogun State’s democratic history, whose influence extended beyond government house into family life, community values, and moral leadership.

“Mama Onabanjo was a model of a virtuous woman and a pioneering First Lady in Ogun State democratic history. She was a dutiful and responsible mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who kept the Onabanjo family going remarkably well over the years,” the senator said.

Senator Adeola prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul and asked God to grant the Onabanjo family the fortitude to bear what he described as an irreparable loss.

Mama Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo’s passing marks the close of a significant chapter in Ogun State’s democratic journey, leaving behind a legacy of faith, sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering support for the ideals that shaped modern governance in the state.
