The Nigeria Police have launched a full-scale manhunt for the gunmen responsible for a deadly attack on the National Forest Rangers’ office in Oloka Village, Oyo State, which claimed the lives of five officers.
The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, confirmed the development on Wednesday during an on-the-spot security assessment of the affected community. He was joined by heads of sister security agencies and the Commandant of the National Forest Rangers, underscoring the gravity of the incident and the coordinated response now underway.
During an interactive session with community leaders in Oloka, the police commissioner expressed deep condolences to the families of the fallen officers and reassured residents of the Nigeria Police Force’s resolve—working alongside other security agencies—to prevent a recurrence.
CP Haruna clarified that contrary to some media reports, the attack was specifically targeted at the National Forest Rangers’ office and did not extend into the wider community. He noted that the swift and proactive deployment of police operatives helped contain the situation and prevent further loss of life.
Preliminary findings indicate that about 12 armed men emerged from nearby bushes, opened sporadic gunfire on the rangers’ facility, and fled the scene shortly after the attack.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, the commissioner immediately deployed all available operational assets to the area, including tactical teams, intelligence operatives, and mobile police personnel. The Area Commander, Divisional Police Officer of Ikoyi Division, and other specialized units were directed to secure the scene, protect the community, and gather evidence.
The remains of the slain officers have since been deposited, while the attack site was forensically examined to recover vital evidence. The police command has also reinforced security in the axis, boosting surveillance, intelligence gathering, and rapid response capabilities.
“The Oyo State Police Command reiterates its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property and assures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the swift apprehension and prosecution of the perpetrators,” the statement said.
Investigations are ongoing, with police authorities expressing confidence that emerging leads will soon result in arrests. For now, security agencies remain on high alert as efforts intensify to bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
