The Ogun State Police Command has issued a public advisory following a spike in drowning incidents across the state, calling on residents to exercise heightened vigilance around rivers, streams, and swimming pools.
The advisory, signed by DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, Police Public Relations Officer, stresses that most drowning cases are preventable and underscores the importance of safety measures to avoid unnecessary loss of life.
Authorities specifically directed hotel owners and operators of recreational facilities to ensure that swimming pools comply with safety standards, including proper supervision, clear markings, trained lifeguards on duty, and readily available safety equipment to handle emergencies.
The Commissioner of Police emphasized that drowning fatalities are unacceptable and urged both facility operators and members of the public to take personal and collective responsibility for safety.
“The Ogun Police Command warns the public of a recent rise in drowning incidents across the State. Members of the public are urged to exercise extreme caution when swimming in rivers, streams, or swimming pools,” the statement read.
The advisory serves as a timely reminder as residents and tourists increasingly visit water bodies for recreation, highlighting the need for vigilance, preparedness, and adherence to safety protocols to prevent further tragedies.
