Tinubu Nominates Former Rivers Administrator Ibas, Dambazau, Others as Ambassadors

President Bola Tinubu has submitted another batch of non-career ambassadorial nominees to the Senate, with several high-profile former government officials making the list.

Among the new nominees are the immediate past Sole Administrator of Rivers State and former Chief of Naval Staff, Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas; former presidential aide, Ita Enang; former Imo First Lady, Chioma Ohakim; and former Minister of Interior and retired Chief of Army Staff, Abdulrahman Dambazau.

The nominations were announced on Thursday during plenary after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the president’s letter requesting swift legislative action to fill key diplomatic positions.

Akpabio has forwarded the list to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs with a one-week deadline to screen the nominees and report back.

The latest submission comes days after the President earlier sent 32 ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation. In two separate letters, Tinubu sought approval for 15 career ambassadors and 17 non-career ambassadors, according to a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga noted that the list includes four women among the career nominees and six among the non-career nominees.

He added that the envoys will be deployed to countries with strategic ties to Nigeria, including China, India, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and South Africa, as well as to key multilateral missions such as the United Nations, UNESCO and the African Union.

Their specific postings will be determined after Senate confirmation.
