The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has strongly condemned the assault on Juliet Enabulele, a reporter with the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS), who was attacked and manhandled by Kelly Okungbowa, popularly known as Ebo Stone, at a public event in Benin City on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the Council, Festus Alenkhe, and the Secretary, Andy Egbon, the Union described the incident as a direct attack on press freedom and the safety of journalists.
The leadership noted that the action was not only unacceptable but also undermined the constitutional role journalists play in strengthening democracy.
According to the statement, journalists must be allowed to carry out their lawful duties without fear, intimidation or violence. The NUJ warned that such incidents will no longer be tolerated, and called on public figures and members of the public to show greater respect for media professionals.
The Union also urged the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to immediately arrest Kelly Okungbowa, conduct a thorough investigation and ensure he is held accountable for his actions.
The NUJ emphasized that protecting journalists is essential to safeguarding democracy and ensuring that the media continues to serve the public interest.
