Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has called on the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council to ensure a transparent and fair process in the selection of a new Awujale of Ijebuland following the passing of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
Oba Adetona, who reigned for over 65 years, died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving vacant one of the most revered stools in Yorubaland.
Speaking after a meeting with members of the Chiefs-in-Council in Iperu, Abiodun emphasized the urgency of filling the vacuum, assuring that his administration would support whoever emerges through due process.
“Nature abhors a vacuum, and the process of installing another Awujale has started,” the governor said. “We must ensure that all the provisions of the laws of Ijebuland are strictly followed. I believe this meeting has put to rest the rumours making the rounds.”
He expressed confidence that the kingmakers would conduct a rancour-free process, stressing that all contenders would be given equal opportunity.
Abiodun also praised the Chiefs for their role in sustaining peace during the long reign of the late monarch, noting their commitment to preserving unity in Ijebuland.
Deputy Chairman of the Council, Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso, reaffirmed the body’s dedication to peace-building, assuring that members would continue to work together in harmony for the progress of the land.
