The Edo State Police Command has arrested a female suspect who reportedly escaped from police custody after her initial arrest over alleged human trafficking in Edo State.
The suspect identified as Mrs. Anita, was arrested by youths at the PZ area on the Benin-Sapele road in Benin City and handed over to the police last week in the Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
The suspect who reportedly escaped from police custody at the South Ibie police division in the Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.
She was arrested by the Edo State Security Corps, otherwise known as vigilantes, over the alleged abduction of four male teenagers and handed over to the South Ibie police division, but she escaped from custody.
The suspect reportedly took the four teenagers into a vehicle and drove them to her house under the guise of taking them to Lagos to learn internet fraud before she was arrested by the vigilantes.
Following her escape, women and youths reportedly staged a protest in the penultimate week, accusing the police of aiding her escape.
The protesters alleged that the woman wanted to traffic the teenagers to Lagos and sell them.
The command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the rearrest of the suspect, saying that the suspect was in their custody, and an investigation is ongoing.
