The Rivers State Police Command has arrested seven suspected members of the Deygbam cult group in connection with the brutal murder of a Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Barrister Bright Owhor.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 4, 2025, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Grace Iringe Koko, disclosed that Barrister Owhor, aged 46 and residing at No. 40c Market Road, Rumuomasi, Port Harcourt, was gunned down by unknown assailants on July 6, 2025.
Following the incident, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit were deployed to investigate and apprehend the perpetrators. Through a ten-day operation involving intelligence gathering and technical surveillance, the police arrested all individuals linked to the crime.
The suspects are identified as Prince Samuel, 30, an armed operative; Daniel Godwin, 25, the driver of the getaway vehicle; Henry Peter, 24, the arms supplier who also shot the victim; Godfrey Emmanuel a.k.a. Ibu, 30, the gang leader; Chukwu Nneji, 34; Justice Dimkpa, 27; and Promise Wikere, 22, identified as the handler of stolen vehicles.
According to SP Koko, the suspects confessed to being members of the Deygbam secret cult and admitted to their involvement in the murder, as well as the withdrawal of funds from the victim’s bank account. They also confessed to participating in recent cult-related violence involving BS and G12 Deygbam factions in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt.
Exhibits recovered from the suspects include one MTN SIM card, four locally made pistols, seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, two live cartridges, a mini bus, and a Toyota Camry.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, praised the operatives for their swift and effective operation, emphasizing the Command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents. He noted that the arrests are part of a broader strategy to dismantle cultist and criminal networks across the state and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
