Rivers: Social Media Influencer In Police Net Over Defamatory Post Against Abroad Based Nigerian

A social media influencer, David Obasi who goes by the nick name @boymanagerO on X (formerly Twitter) have been arrested by the operatives of Area Command Choba of the Rivers State Police on Friday, August 1, 2025.

Obasi was arrested for allegedly making defamatory post against an abroad based Nigerian, John Adekola, known as @Mcphils_ on X.

The suspect had posted on his X account: "Scammer Alert" with the picture of Adekola, stating "Watch out for @Mcphils_ and two others. Don't sell accounts to them. They take your account and block you. Be warned ".

In reaction to the post made by Mr Obasi, Adekola through his lawyer Ibukun Optimist Ahisu, in a letter dated 13 June 2025, the victim demanded deletion of the post, retraction, public apology but Mr Obasi was said to have ignored the requests.

The development, we learnt, prompted the filing of a formal petition to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Lion Building Police Station, Area A Command, Campbell Street, Lagos Adekola’s legal counsel, Ibukun Optimist Ahisu, against Obasi.

In the petition dated 17th June, Adekola’s attorney, accused Obasi of defamation, criminal harassment, and violation cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act 2015.

We further gathered that the operatives of lion building in Lagos had through discreet investigation with operatives of Choba Area Command arrested the suspect on Friday, 1 August 2025, where he is presently detained.

Our reporter sighted messages of apology by Obasi via X to Adekola, pleading for forgiveness shortly after the suspect’s was arrested.

Adekola had in a  message to Journalists confirmed the development, regretting the damage the defamatory post on his X account had on his image and reputation, insisting that he had never been in contact with Obasi or scammed anyone.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of  the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police,SP confirmed the arrest of the suspect.
