Edo State Government Rescues Abused Pupil of Okouve Primary School

The Edo State Government, through the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and in partnership with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Gender Issues, has rescued an allegedly abused pupil, Glory Joseph, and relocated her to a secure shelter in Benin City. The 10-year-old is currently receiving medical care and psychological support.

According to the Executive Chairman of Edo SUBEB, Hon. Omonzane Sonia, the abuse case was reported by Osifo Okungbowa, a Primary Four teacher at Okouve Primary School in Oghede, Ovia North East LGA.

The teacher had noticed a severe neck injury on the child and questioned her. Glory revealed that on Sunday, May 25, she was physically assaulted by her “big aunty,” identified as Mercy, and Mercy’s two daughters, while alone at home in Uholor Barracks.

The victim recounted that her abusers tied a scarf around her neck and beat her in the stomach with a pestle. She further revealed a disturbing history of maltreatment, including being forced to drink cement and being stabbed. After losing her mother, Glory had been living with her grandmother and another aunt, Blessing, who frequently accused her of witchcraft.

Upon receiving the teacher’s report, the school headmistress, Agbonile Glory, escalated the case to the Evbotubu Police Station and the Local Government Education Authority.

The police promptly initiated an investigation and ordered the arrest of the suspects. So far, one suspect, Miracle, is in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects, Mercy and Vivian.

Hon. Omonzane added that the Board’s Child Safeguarding and Protection Officer, Mrs. Osemwengie Isoken Betty, is actively involved in the case. She is working closely with the school, police, and social welfare authorities to ensure that all child protection protocols are upheld and that Glory receives the necessary support for her recovery and long-term welfare.

Edo SUBEB commended the school for its swift action and reaffirmed its commitment to child protection within the education system. The Board emphasized that it will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure justice is served and to safeguard all children from abuse.

“This case is deeply distressing,” said Hon. Omonzane. “We are working hand-in-hand with law enforcement and the Ministry of Women Affairs to ensure the child is safe and justice is pursued. Every child deserves a safe and nurturing learning environment. We urge the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects.”
