The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for stricter safety measures to manage large gatherings in the state following recent stampedes during philanthropic events in parts of the country.
The appeal followed multiple tragedies in Oyo, states Anambra and FCT where stampedes at charity events have resulted in fatalities, sparking a nationwide discussion on safety protocols for such gatherings.
To prevent similar incidents in Lagos, Governor Sanwo-olu urged individuals and groups planning to distribute items to large crowds to obtain clearance from the Lagos State Safety Commission.
In a message shared on X account, Sanwo-Olu said: “To prevent such occurrences in Lagos State, I urge all individuals or groups intending to distribute items to large gatherings to seek clearance from the Lagos State Safety Commission. The agency is well-equipped to ensure that such events do not turn tragic,”
He expressed sympathy for the victims of recent incidents, saying: “We have observed with serious concern the recent stampedes during philanthropic gestures by individuals and organizations in some parts of the country. I sympathize with the families whose loved ones were involved in these tragic events that resulted in the loss of lives,”
Sanwo-Olu emphasised that the Lagos State Safety Commission is equipped to oversee safety protocols and ensure that such gatherings are effectively managed.
He also highlighted its collaboration with security agencies to enhance crowd control during events with significant attendance.
The Governor encouraged organisers to register their events through the commission’s platform to secure the necessary approvals and ensure public safety.
