As preparations intensify for the 2024 National Sports Festival, set to take place in January 2025, Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has assured that the state will provide cutting-edge facilities for the event.
During a recent inspection of the renovation work at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Kuto and the Ijeja Sports Centre in Abeokuta, the Governor emphasized his administration's commitment to enhancing the venues. He noted that the MKO Abiola Stadium, built approximately 30-35 years ago, is undergoing its first major reconstruction.
"This renovation reflects our dedication and aligns with Ogun State's standards," Abiodun stated, expressing confidence that the upgraded stadium will become one of the best in Nigeria and serve as a lasting legacy.
The Governor praised the ongoing work, particularly the construction of an Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis court, and handball court, as well as improvements to the main pitch and track. He highlighted the professionalism of the contractors and their familiarity with the facility, which bodes well for the project’s success.
In addition to the stadium, the Alake Sports Centre will also be completely revamped, as the Governor lamented its previous neglect. He aims to create a world-class sports festival that fosters unity and engagement among youth, emphasizing the role of sports in developing teamwork and leadership skills.
The festival, scheduled from January 12 to January 26, 2025, aims not only to showcase athletic talent but also to position Ogun State as a hub for sports excellence. Governor Abiodun envisions the facilities becoming a center for youth training and talent development beyond the games.
