Ogun State Health Officials Urge Parents to Vaccinate Children Against Measles

In a renewed push for the measles vaccination campaign in Ogun State, parents, guardians, and caregivers are encouraged to have their children vaccinated to prevent measles and other related illnesses.

During a radio appearance in Abeokuta, Commissioner for Health Dr. Tomi Coker emphasized that measles is a highly contagious airborne disease, and early vaccination is essential for protection. She noted, "By getting vaccinated, you not only safeguard yourself but also help protect your community, significantly reducing the chance of spreading the virus."

Dr. Coker highlighted the program's success, pointing out that while 117 measles cases were reported in 2022, this number dropped to just 29 in 2024, thanks to the vaccination efforts aimed at covering 95 percent of children in the state.

"Measles can severely impact a child's developing brain, potentially leading to convulsions, blindness, deafness, and hindering their ability to contribute positively to their community and the nation," she warned.

She also mentioned that the Federal Ministry of Health is working towards local manufacturing of vaccines and medications, aiming for Nigeria's self-sufficiency in vaccine production.

Accompanied by Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, Executive Secretary of the Primary Healthcare Development Board, Dr. Coker conducted site visits to vaccination centers at various religious institutions in Abeokuta South, where she personally vaccinated several children.

At one of the designated centers, Allahu Muheeb Islamic Movement on Quarry Road, cleric Alhaji Abdul-Kabir Bakare praised the initiative and pledged support for children's health initiatives.
