Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, officially launched the sale of subsidised rice on Thursday, announcing that his administration will soon introduce the sale of additional subsidised food items across all twenty local government areas.
During the launch event held at the Arcade Ground of the Governor's Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun emphasized that this initiative aims to broaden access to affordable food staples, including garri, rice, and beans, at significantly reduced prices.
He stated, “We will soon implement our version of this program across each local government area, allowing us to reach the grassroots effectively.”
The Governor commended the state’s Head of Service and his team for their efforts in facilitating this initiative. He outlined that the distribution will target various groups, including civil servants, artisans, trade unions, NGOs, student bodies, market women, and community organizations.
Abiodun assured residents that a structured plan has been developed in collaboration with the Head of Service, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the National Security Adviser’s office to ensure fair and equitable distribution of the subsidised commodities.
The launch included sales points in Abeokuta for Ogun Central Senatorial District, with additional points set for Ilaro and Ijebu-Ode to serve the other districts.
The Governor urged beneficiaries to adhere to regulations at sales locations to prevent overcrowding, noting that payment will be made through Point of Sale (PoS) systems, and that physical verification will be required. To ensure integrity, he mentioned that no double registration would be permitted and that National Identity Numbers (NIN) would be verified to avoid fraudulent practices.
He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the initiative, highlighting its significance in addressing food inflation and showcasing the President's commitment to the welfare of citizens.
Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, the Head of Service, emphasized the program's potential to improve the livelihoods of citizens. Senator Abubakar Kyari, represented by Mrs. Ayo Ajayi, lauded Ogun State's effective implementation plan, stating it would serve as a model for other states.
The initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on residents by making essential food items more affordable.
