Ogun State Initiates Major Renovations for Upcoming 2024 Gateway Games


The Ogun State Government has begun extensive reconstruction and renovation of the MKO Abiola International Stadium and the Alake Sports Centre in Ijeja, Abeokuta, in preparation for the National Sports Festival (NSF), known as the "2024 Gateway Games."

Following an inspection of the facilities, Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, assured that the renovation would be completed on schedule and thoroughly tested before the event.


Ongoing improvements include the scraping of the main stadium pitch, removal of the tartan track, and repairs to the roof of the Alake Sports Centre's indoor hall. The commissioner led journalists on a tour of the renovation sites.

He revealed plans to expand the VIP section of the stadium and construct an Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis courts, and handball courts within the facility.


Hon. Isiaka emphasized the current administration's commitment to enhancing sports and youth development programs, aiming to discover and nurture young athletes.


He highlighted the significance of harnessing youth potential, directing their energy toward productive endeavors for personal growth and the socio-economic advancement of the state. The government is dedicated to organizing a world-class National Sports Festival.

According to the commissioner, the festival will gather the state's top athletes, inspire future talent, showcase cultural heritage, and reward exceptional performances.


He noted that the extensive renovations will not only enhance the skills and dedication of local athletes leading up to and during the games but will also demonstrate the state government's readiness to host the National Sports Festival. He called for corporate support and community involvement to ensure the NSF's success.


The commissioner reiterated that the festival is an opportunity for the state to shine, showcasing its wealth of talent and hospitality. He confirmed the state government's commitment to hosting a premier event, with facilities that will attract both national and international competitions.


The National Sports Festival is scheduled to take place from January 12 to January 26, 2025.
