The Nigerian Senate experienced a tense moment, during a discussion about enforcing the Supreme Court's ruling that gave financial independence to the 774 Local Government Councils (LGCs).
Senator Tony Nwoye (LP, Anambra North) raised concerns that some state governments were trying to go around the court's decision by creating new laws in their state assemblies.
Nwoye explained that these governors wanted local councils to send their money into a joint account with the state, even though the Supreme Court said that such accounts are unconstitutional.
He was supported by nine other senators in raising this issue, which led to the Senate holding an emergency session to address it.
