The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is recognized globally for his integrity, according to Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi. This statement came in response to questions regarding the ongoing political unrest in Rivers State.
Adejobi's comments follow recent violence related to the local government elections held on October 5. Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has accused the IGP of colluding with others to undermine the election process. In light of these accusations,
Egbetokun withdrew police officers from the state ahead of the elections, placing security under the control of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Despite President’s orders to redeploy police personnel to ensure order, Adejobi deemed Fubara’s remarks towards the IGP as unwarranted. He emphasized, “For clarity, the public is encouraged to review the IGP’s career and achievements, which reflect his honor, integrity, and dedication since taking office as the 22nd Indigenous Inspector General of Police of Nigeria.”
He further highlighted Egbetokun's respect among his peers in the Association of Chiefs of Police Worldwide and noted his leadership role as Chairman of the West African Police Chiefs Committee (WAPCCO), where he is recognized for his commendable guidance.
Adejobi also called for civility in the Nigerian political landscape, asserting that the Nigeria Police will refrain from engaging in any media disputes with the Rivers State governor.
