The Ogun State police have arrested 33-year-old Olayemi Olawale Shedrack, a suspect in the armed robbery and rape of female students at Tai University of Education in Ijagun, located in the Odogbolu local government area.
This arrest follows incidents in July when female students at the Royal Villa accommodation were attacked and robbed of laptops, cash, and other valuables.
Police Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola confirmed the arrest to reporters on Monday morning, revealing that Shedrack had been on the police's wanted list.
Odutola stated that the suspect was apprehended based on intelligence reports while attempting to hide among a crowd. She said, “Olayemi Olawale Shedrack has been wanted for armed robbery and rape. He is the prime suspect in the July 21, 2024, incident where he and his accomplices broke into the Royal Villa accommodation, robbing vulnerable female students of their valuable educational devices, including laptops, iPhones, wristwatches, and cash, while also assaulting them."
Thanks to a tip-off, police located Shedrack in Ijagun, where his identity was confirmed. He was swiftly apprehended.
The PPRO added that Shedrack will soon be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution. Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Alamutu Abiodun has urged the Ijagun community to provide credible information to help arrest other suspects involved in the crimes.
