Ogun State Assembly Passes Consumer Protection Bill to Safeguard Consumer Rights

In an effort to combat consumer extortion, disputes, and unethical practices, the Ogun State House of Assembly has successfully passed the Consumer Protection Bill, 2024.

The bill, titled “HB No. 013/OG/2021 - A law to Establish the Ogun State Consumer Protection Agency, Safeguard Consumer Interests, and Facilitate the Resolution of Consumer Disputes,” was presented by Hon. Lukman Adeleye during a plenary session led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Following the presentation of the report by the Committee on Industry, Trade, and Investments, Adeleye moved for the adoption of the report, which was seconded by Hon. Babatunde Tella and supported by a voice vote from fellow lawmakers.

The bill underwent a clause-by-clause reading and adoption by the Committee of the Whole House. The motion for its third reading was subsequently moved by Majority Leader Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by Dickson Awolaja, with the Clerk of the House, Mr. Sakiru Adebakin, conducting the third reading before the assembly.

In response, Speaker Elemide instructed that a finalized copy of the bill be sent to the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his approval.

Additionally, the Speaker announced the appointment of three new Deputy Clerks in alignment with the House of Assembly Service Commission (Amendment) Law. Barr (Mrs.) Funmilayo Adeyemi will serve as Deputy Clerk I, overseeing Planning, Training, and Legal Services; Mr. Temitope Hokon will be Deputy Clerk II, responsible for Legislative Services, Information, and Public Service; while Mr. Fatai Ayodeji will be Deputy Clerk III, managing Administration, Finance, and Supplies.
