The Ogun State Government has initiated the reconstruction of a troubled section of the Sagamu-Ore-Benin Expressway near Sagamu, aimed at relieving the traffic congestion affecting motorists.

Governor Dapo Abiodun made an unannounced visit to the problematic area on Sunday, highlighting the road's significance as a crucial link from Lagos through Ogun State to the South-East and South-South regions. He noted that its deteriorating condition has caused significant hardship for daily commuters.

Abiodun explained that although previous administrations had awarded contracts for the road's reconstruction, work was only completed from the Benin end to the outskirts of Ijebu-Ode, leaving the interchange unfinished due to insufficient funding.

“This is a federal road and one of the most vital routes to Southern Nigeria, facilitating the movement of goods and people,” he stated. He pointed out that a blocked drainage system was the primary cause of recent impassability, creating severe flooding on the road.

State officials from the Ministries of Works and Environment are working to construct an alternative drainage system to redirect water, while the damaged road has been temporarily reinforced with hardcore to improve access.

Abiodun has raised the issue with the Minister of Works, who has committed to exploring options for a rehabilitation contract or immediate palliative measures. He also informed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the road’s condition and the urgent need for federal intervention.

“I emphasized the importance of this road to Mr. President. We are aware of the federal government’s many priorities, but our state has been proactive in addressing this issue,” Abiodun said.

The governor revealed that if there is no substantial progress from the federal government in the next two days, Ogun State will take ownership of the road section and carry out full reconstruction efforts.
