Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, announced that the removal of fuel subsidies by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will save Nigeria a staggering N5.4 trillion by the end of 2024. He emphasized that continuing the subsidy would have posed a significant financial burden, consuming a large portion of the Federal Government's N6.7 trillion budget for the year.
Speaking during a special church service to commemorate Nigeria's 64th National Day at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter in Abeokuta, Abiodun praised the President's decisive action as essential for safeguarding the nation's economy and preventing bankruptcy. He noted that the funds saved from subsidy payments could be redirected to vital infrastructure development and social services.
Abiodun called for constructive engagement with the government, urging citizens to avoid protests that could lead to violence and destruction. He encouraged resilience, prayer, and cooperation with the administration, highlighting ongoing initiatives to alleviate the impact of current economic challenges. These include deploying CNG buses, introducing energy transition programs, reducing civil servant workdays, and providing free healthcare services for vulnerable populations.
In his address, the Rt. Rev'd Dr. Akinwande Godwin Odubena, Bishop of Ijebu North Anglican Diocese, stressed the importance of leadership in navigating Nigeria's pressing issues such as hyper-inflation, oil theft, insecurity, and unemployment. He called for unity and hope, urging leaders to confront challenges directly while emphasizing the need for dialogue over violence.
