The Ogun State House of Assembly has called on the management of the State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) to strictly follow electoral guidelines in preparation for the Local Government elections scheduled for November 16.
During a meeting with the State Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC), led by Chairman Comrade Sanyaolu Abayomi, Speaker Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide emphasized the importance of conducting the election in accordance with the nation's constitution and the State electoral act. He assured that the Assembly is prepared to collaborate with OGSIEC to facilitate a free and fair election.
Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye and Ewekoro State Constituency Representative Yusuf Amosun also urged the Commission to ensure that all election processes comply with constitutional provisions to avoid potential legal disputes before, during, and after the election. They expressed the Assembly's readiness to assist in amending the State electoral law if necessary.
In his address, IPAC Chairman Comrade Sanyaolu, represented by PRO Itunu Abioro, requested a reduction in the administrative fees charged by OGSIEC to enable more candidates to participate in the local government elections.
Responding on behalf of the Commission, Commissioner 1 for Operations, Mr. Tunji Akonni, highlighted OGSIEC's ongoing engagement with stakeholders, including IPAC, and affirmed that the electoral guidelines have been approved by the Assembly in line with State electoral law. He encouraged political parties to nominate credible candidates, conduct vigorous campaigns, and ensure they have party agents present at polling stations, noting that many parties failed to do so in previous elections.
