Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has unveiled several key initiatives aimed at regulating market prices and improving conditions for traders. During a meeting with market leaders, including Iyaloja General, Chief (Mrs.) Yemisi Abass, at the Governor's Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the Governor announced that all market levies are suspended. Only development and environmental levies, which are for market upkeep, will be permitted.
Governor Abiodun also introduced the Gateway Trading Company, a rebranded version of the state's Bulk Purchasing Company, designed to help lower food prices. The company will start operations in the state's four zones, buying in bulk and reselling at reduced rates.
Additionally, the Governor revealed plans to tackle illegal market practices. A market enforcement task force will be established, mirroring a central body across all twenty local government areas to eliminate unlawful levies and coercion. Anyone caught imposing illegal fees will face legal consequences.
Governor Abiodun further committed to addressing exorbitant shop and stall rents, ensuring they are reasonable and transparent. He also highlighted upcoming support for farmers and market vendors, including low-interest loans and grants through the Ogun Empowerment Scheme.
The Governor emphasized a collaborative effort to manage market waste effectively and improve overall conditions. Chief Yemisi Abass praised the Governor for his proactive measures and expressed satisfaction with the resolutions made.
