Nigeria’s Onyinyechi Mark has set a new Paralympic record in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category by lifting an impressive 145kg. This remarkable achievement surpasses the previous record held by fellow Nigerian athlete Lucy Ejike.
With one lift remaining, Mark is well-positioned to secure Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Her closest rival is set to attempt 138kg on her final lift, while Mark will aim to extend her record further with a final attempt of 147kg.
Nigeria has a proud tradition of excellence in the Paralympics, particularly in powerlifting and athletics. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, the nation won ten medals, including four golds.
The success of athletes like Lucy Ejike and Bose Omolayo, who have set world records and claimed multiple golds, underscores Nigeria’s strong commitment to supporting and developing its para-athletes.
