Following a petition against former Ewekoro Local Government Chairman, Mr. Sikiru Adesina, the Ogun State House of Assembly has summoned him to appear before the Assembly during its next session next week.
Adesina is accused of unlawfully selling local government property while in office. The petition, filed by a group called 'Concerned Citizens of Ewekoro Local Government,' alleges that Adesina was involved in the illegal sale of government land, neglect of public interest, and failure to maintain accountability.
The petition, addressed to the Speaker and signed by Mr. Aderibigbe Ajani Kolapo and Alhaji Kashimu Ashimiu, claims, “We, the undersigned citizens and stakeholders of Ewekoro Local Government, submit this petition to express our serious concerns about the activities of the local government Chairman from 2021 to the present. We accuse him of illegal sales of government lands and properties conducted without due process or transparency.”
It further states that numerous transactions involving the sale of government properties have allegedly taken place without proper authorization, public notice, or adherence to legal procedures. The petition asserts that these sales were conducted secretly, raising concerns about possible corruption and mismanagement.
The contested properties are said to be crucial for community development and infrastructure. The alleged unauthorized sales have reportedly deprived Ewekoro residents of potential public amenities and economic benefits.
During a meeting of the Assembly’s Committee on Public Accounts and Anti-Corruption on Thursday, the committee, led by Hon. Bello Oluwadamilare, questioned Mrs. Kemi Ogunyewo, the Head of the Local Government Area (HOLGA), for nearly two hours regarding the petition.
Ogunyewo, accompanied by four career officers, denied the allegations, stating that the lands in question were leased, not sold, to companies and individuals for 99 years at an annual fee of N10,000 per acre.
Despite her defense, the committee has instructed Ogunyewo and other officials to provide detailed records of all local government lands—whether sold, leased, or still owned—along with documentation of projects executed from 2021 to 2024 and their costs.
The committee also requested the Council’s Engineer to submit inspection reports on the leased lands and the Council’s Treasurer to provide correspondence related to inactive bank accounts.
The committee adjourned until next Tuesday and directed former Chairman Adesina to appear and address the allegations detailed in the petition.
