As Ogun State's local government elections approach, the group 'Concerned Progressive Persons with Disabilities' is urging Governor Dapo Abiodun to ensure that people with disabilities are represented in elective positions across all 20 LGAs.
In an open letter signed by Kamaldeen Olatunji Lawal, Dr. Michael Ebonhor, and Abiodun Adebesin, the group highlights the significant impact that including PWDs in local governance would have on the community. They specifically mention a chairmanship aspirant in Odogbolu Local Government and nine others vying for councillorship positions in various areas.
The letter emphasizes the opportunity for promoting inclusivity and diversity in leadership, appealing to Governor Abiodun to support these candidates and provide a level playing field free from discrimination.
“We respectfully request your esteemed office to support our candidates as we approach the November elections,” the letter states. “Recognizing their potential and ensuring their success would demonstrate your administration’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity.”
The letter also points out the historical marginalization and inadequate representation of PWDs in Ogun State, expressing hope that the governor’s support will enable PWDs to take on significant leadership roles.
Among the notable PWD candidates are Fasola Olamide from Ward 11, seeking the position of Executive Chairman of Odogbolu Local Government, and Babatunde Nureni Alao, who is running for Councillor in Ward 3, Ado Odo Ota Local Government. Other aspirants include Yekini Adeniyi Abiodun for Ward 13 in Odogbolu, Thomas Francisca Isioma for Ward 10 in Sagamu, and Wasiu Olalekan Jinadu for Ward 4 in Ifo Local Government. Additional councillorship candidates are Caleb Adesina Akiije-Ogunyemi from Ward 2, Ijebu-North, Mabawonku Kabir Oyedele, and Salaudeen Omotosho Kosamat from Ward 13, both in Sagamu Local Government.
