Germany secured a 3-1 win over Nigeria in their FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Group D match at Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogota on Wednesday night, thanks to two decisive goals in the final half-hour.
Nigeria had an early opportunity to take the lead in the second minute when they intercepted the ball from Germany. However, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu missed the chance to score, opting to take the shot herself rather than passing to teammates in better positions, allowing German goalkeeper Rebecca Adamczyk to make the save.
Germany came close to scoring in the 10th minute, but Rofiat Imuran’s cross from the left failed to find Okwuchukwu. The Germans took the lead in the 17th minute when Schitler headed in a precise cross from the right, leaving Nigerian goalkeeper Shukura Bakare out of position.
Nigeria had a chance to equalize before halftime, but Imuran's weak effort was saved by Adamczyk after another run down the left flank.
In the second half, Nigeria leveled the score five minutes in when Okwuchukwu capitalized on a mistake by Jalla Veit and Adamczyk, finishing into an open goal for her first goal of the tournament.
Germany regained the lead in the 61st minute with Zoebell scoring from a cross, despite pressure from two Nigerian defenders. Okwuchukwu had a goal disallowed two minutes later for offside after a strong effort against Adamczyk.
Germany sealed the victory in added time with a flying header from Ernst off a cross, leaving Bakare helpless. With this win, Germany advances to the Round of 16, having previously defeated Venezuela 5-2 on Matchday 1.
Nigeria’s next challenge will be a match against Venezuela in Cali on Saturday evening.
