Nigerian students, led by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), have announced a nationwide protest set for September 15, 2024, in response to recent fuel price increases. The student body is demanding an immediate reversal of the fuel price hike and the removal of NNPC Director General, Mele Kyari, whom they accuse of incompetence.
In a statement signed by Okunomo Henry Adewumi, President of the Senate (NANS), students are urged to participate in a peaceful and lawful shutdown of major cities across Nigeria. The notice highlights the severe impact of rising fuel prices on the general population and stresses the need for urgent action.
“We are organizing a massive shutdown of all major cities starting September 15, 2024, to protest the recent fuel price increase and the perceived failure of NNPC DG Mele Kyari. The continual rise in fuel prices has inflicted significant hardship on Nigerians, and we can no longer stand by as our future is compromised by these actions,” the statement reads.
Students are called to action, and organizers assure that the protest will be conducted peacefully while urging authorities to ensure law and order during the demonstration.
