On Tuesday, a violent incident occurred in Ilisan Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area, where a group of youths killed and set fire to a man suspected of attempting to steal a motorcycle. The deceased, alleged to be part of a two-man gang, was attacked while trying to steal from an Hausa motorcyclist.
The mob managed to capture and burn one suspect, while the other, disguised in an army uniform, fled and sought refuge in a nearby house. This led to a standoff with a crowd of over 200 demanding the suspect’s release. Despite efforts to control the situation, tensions escalated.
A joint team of soldiers and police intervened, leading to a dramatic rescue operation involving tear gas and a shootout with the angry crowd, who also damaged vehicles. The soldiers successfully extracted the suspect from the house and restored order.
Idereghi Akari, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, clarified that the soldier in uniform was not a thief and that the deceased was a civilian, not involved in the theft.
