Abe Sunday, the longtime captain of Sunshine Stars FC, has declared his retirement from professional football after an illustrious career spanning nearly 20 years. In a heartfelt press conference held in Akure on Wednesday, Sunday shared his decision to step away from the game.
Reflecting on his career, Sunday expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead his boyhood club, Sunshine Stars, and for his loan stint with Teuta Durres FC in Albania during the 2017/2018 season. He also highlighted his contributions to the Nigerian national teams, including the U-17 AFCON and World Cup qualifiers, the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt, and the U-23 team as well as the home-based Super Eagles in 2010.
Sunday extended his thanks to his clubs, coaches, teammates, fans, and the media, as well as his family and friends, who have supported him throughout his journey. He emphasized that, although he is retiring from playing, football will always be a part of him.
