Ogun State has officially introduced its health insurance scheme tailored for the formal sector, which includes public and civil servants as well as employees in the organized private sector. This initiative follows the earlier launch of a similar scheme for the informal sector, such as artisans and traders, in February 2022.
Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, represented by Deputy Governor Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, announced that the state government will cover 50% of the premium for every registered worker under this new scheme. This move aims to prioritize the welfare of the workforce and is part of the 2024 Public Service Day celebrations.
Abiodun highlighted the scheme’s alignment with the administration’s commitment to enhancing public service, stressing the importance of collaboration with health officials and stakeholders for its successful implementation and continuous improvement.
Dr. Tomi Coker, Commissioner for Health, noted that a significant portion of Nigerians currently bear healthcare costs out-of-pocket, often leading to severe financial strain. She urged residents to utilize both the informal and formal sector schemes for financial protection against high medical expenses.
Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, emphasized the vital link between good health and productive socio-economic activities, affirming the administration’s focus on healthcare as a means to boost workforce efficiency.
In support, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ogun State Chapter, Comrade Ademola Benco, praised Governor Abiodun for his worker-friendly policies and commitment to worker welfare, pledging the union's support for the scheme's success.
