Ogun Governor Launches Fertilizer Program, Vows to Combat Food Scarcity

On Monday, Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun initiated the first phase of a fertilizer distribution program aimed at addressing food scarcity in the state. This initial phase will distribute 24,000 bags of fertilizer to approximately 7,000 of the 12,000 farmers targeted by the scheme.

Speaking at the Governor's Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Abiodun highlighted the widening gap between global food supply and production, stressing the need for urgent measures to combat food inflation. He stated, “Our initiative goes beyond just distributing fertilizer. It reflects our commitment to supporting the agricultural sector and ensuring farmers have the resources needed to enhance their productivity.”

Abiodun emphasized the significance of this distribution in improving crop yields and food security, noting that agriculture is vital to the nation's economy and job creation. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by farmers, including fluctuating market prices and climate challenges, and expressed confidence that proper support could revolutionize the agricultural sector.

The governor outlined that the program will benefit various farming groups, including associations for cassava, rice, and maize, among others. He also referenced the broader agricultural reforms being implemented under the "Building Our Future Together" agenda, which include land allocations and various support initiatives.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Agriculture Hon. Bolu Owotomo highlighted additional measures, such as a 50 percent discount on fertilizers, pesticides, and cassava stems for 1,000 farmers, and the creation of clusters to enhance mechanization and input affordability for 30,000 farmers.

Alhaji Kudirat Adeoye Kusimo, Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter, commended the state government for its support and urged farmers to use the fertilizers responsibly.
