The House of Assembly of Ogun State has introduced a new bill sponsored by House Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye, aimed at establishing mechanisms for resolving consumer disputes and protecting against unsafe products and practices.
The proposed bill is designed to shield consumers from dangerous goods and services and to ensure the protection of public well-being. Hon. Adeleye highlighted that the bill will provide consumers with the right to comprehensive information regarding the quality, efficacy, purity, standards, and pricing of products and services, addressing unfair trade practices within Ogun State.
During a stakeholders' forum on July 17 at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Speaker Right Honourable Oludaisi Elemide emphasized that the forum was an essential part of the House’s responsibilities to ensure the bill’s success and effectiveness.
The Speaker described the forum as a vital opportunity for stakeholders to participate in discussions and provide input, which will be considered by the House Committee on Industry, Trade, and Investment to improve the bill. He reaffirmed the Assembly’s dedication to advancing legislation that enhances citizens' quality of life.
Stakeholders including Comrade Yinka Folarin of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Alhaji Sina Adefolahan from the Community Education and Advancement of Peace Initiatives, Federal Character Commission’s Mr. Ola Ayeni, Dr. Olatunde Oluwadola, Mr. Ola Animashaun, and Barr. James Mafe from the State Ministry of Justice, praised the bill. They agreed that it would significantly promote consumer health and safety in Ogun State.
