Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has honored Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka by naming the 12.5-kilometer Kemta-Idi Aba-Somorin Road in Abeokuta after the distinguished playwright and scholar.
Governor Abiodun made this announcement during a reception held by the state government on Wednesday to celebrate Prof. Soyinka’s 90th birthday. The Governor lauded Prof. Soyinka for his remarkable achievements in academia and literature, which have not only brought honor to Ogun State and Nigeria but also to the entire Black race.
In his speech, Governor Abiodun praised Prof. Soyinka as a towering figure in world literature whose works have made a significant impact globally. He highlighted how Prof. Soyinka’s writings have shed light on human conditions and showcased the richness of African culture to the international community.
"Prof. Wole Soyinka stands as a monumental figure in literature and a Nobel Laureate whose influence reverberates worldwide. A true luminary of our nation, his life and work are a testament to his extraordinary genius. His intellectual brilliance and unwavering commitment to the advancement of humanity are beyond question," said Governor Abiodun.
He further emphasized that Prof. Soyinka’s 90 years of life represent a divine blessing and expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for renaming the National Arts Theatre in Lagos after the esteemed scholar, acknowledging it as a well-deserved tribute.
"His writings serve as powerful tools for social change and enlightenment, rich in symbolism and depth that have captivated global audiences and transcended cultural barriers. His career in academia, literature, and activism reflects a profound dedication to creating a just and equitable world," the Governor added.
Governor Abiodun also recounted Prof. Soyinka’s struggles during the Nigerian Civil War, where he was imprisoned for 22 months on charges of conspiring with Biafran separatists. Despite these challenges, Prof. Soyinka remained steadfast in his pursuit of a better society.
The Governor congratulated Prof. Soyinka on reaching the milestone of 90 years and wished him many more years of fruitful contributions.
Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, who assisted with cutting the birthday cake, hailed Prof. Soyinka as a champion of democracy and a promoter of human dignity.
The celebration was graced by notable dignitaries including former Ogun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Minister of Transportation Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, and several others.
