FG unveils water transportation code to tackle boat accidents


The Federal Government through the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, has unveiled the water transportation code.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, unveiled the code during his one-day working visit to the head office of the National Inland Waterways Authority in Lokoja, Kogi State capital.

The minister also inaugurated several landmark projects aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities and safety standards of Nigeria’s inland waterways.

Oyetola said that the new regulatory code is expected to significantly standardize water transportation, minimize accidents, and provide a structured environment for potential investors.

He emphasised the critical role of the maritime sector in improving Nigeria’s balance of trade, strengthening the naira, and creating employment.

Oyetola said the  Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is determined to maximize the comparative advantages of our maritime resources present in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. 

The former Osun State Governor commended NIWA’s management for their efforts in bringing this vital code to fruition.
