The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SFG), GEORGE AKUME has summoned organized labour to an emergency meeting in order to avert the on-going strike over a new national minimum wage.
President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Comrade FESTUS OSIFO confirmed this to news men on Monday, June 3.
OSIFO said labour leaders comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress and TUC were heading to the SGF office for the meeting.
A source, who is attending the meeting, said the outcome would determine if labour would call off the on-going strike which had paralyzed economic activities today.
Also, the Federal Government, through the National Salaries Wages and Income Commission, has extended an invitation to the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress.
Meanwhile, some unions have shut their workplaces to comply with the directive of the two labour unions to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike.
On Friday, the organized labour announced that they will be commencing a nationwide indefinite strike due to the refusal of the Federal Government to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities in a statement addressed to the branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators of ASUU on Monday, the association’s President, EMMANUEL OSODEKE, directed lecturers in universities across the country to join the strike as an affiliate of the congress.
