Construction workers begin warning strike over wage award

Workers in the construction industry today began a three-day warning strike over employers’ refusal to implement the Federal Government’s wage award.

The workers, under the aegis of the National Union of Civil Engineering Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers and Construction and Civil Engineering Senior Staff Association, conveyed their grievance and warning in a joint letter signed by the National Presidents, STEPHEN OKORO and AYODEJI ADEYEMO respectively.

Urging all members to ensure total compliance, the unions threatened that the three-day warning strike was to press home their demands.

The National Executive Council of both unions said that if nothing positive was done after the warning strike, indefinite action would commence.

They alleged that the Construction Civil Engineering, Employers Association of Nigeria was frustrating the efforts of the unions on the implementation of the wage award in line with the agreement reached between the Federal Government and organised labour.

According to them, employers in the construction industry in Nigeria have refused the option of dialogue, choosing to adopt a confrontational approach.
