The House of Representatives has expressed readiness to increase the budgetary allocation to the office of the Auditor General of the Federation to over 200 billion naira in a bid to ensure accountability.
The Deputy Speaker, BENJAMIN KALU, made this known during the unveiling ceremony of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts in Abuja.
Hon, KALU explained that the planned increment from 5 billion naira to 200 billion naira was aimed at repositioning the office of the Auditor General of the Federation to live up to its constitutional obligation of oversight on over 900 ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) of government.
The Deputy Speaker remarked that there was no way the office of the Auditor General of the Federation under the present circumstances could effectively investigate the books of the MDAs with an expenditure profile of 21 trillion naira with an insufficient 5 billion naira yearly budgetary allocation.
He argued that with improved funding, the office of the auditor general of the Federation would be well-staffed and equipped with up-to-date technological equipment to discharge its duties effectively.
