South African authorities say at least 73 people have died in a fire in a Johannesburg building.

More than 50 others are injured.

Officials say it is unclear what sparked the blaze at the five-storey building in the city centre, which had been abandoned but was being occupied by homeless people.

A spokesman for the emergency services, Robert Mulaudzi, told reporters that firefighters had been able to bring out some of the occupants.
