The House of Representatives has summoned the heads of some federal government appropriation agencies for attempting to undermine the office of the auditor general.
Chairman of the Committee on Public Accounts, Oluwole Oke, issued the summon while rejecting the reduction of the proposed capital budget of the Auditor General’s Office.
The committee was furious that only 62 million naira has been budgeted for the AuGF’s office as against 2.5 billion naira initially proposed.
The lawmakers question how the auditor general, Adolphus Aghughu, can effectively audit government agencies with such a budget.
The agency heads to appear before the committee are those involved in the budgeting process - the Minister of finance, Zainab Ahmed; the Director-General, Budget Office of the Federation, Ben Akabueze; and the acting Accountant General of Federation, Okolieaboh Sylva.
The lawmakers asked those summoned to appear before the committee within seven days.
