As part of efforts to entrench accountability and transparency in the use of public funds by the executives of the three-tiers of governments, media and financial experts have called for a coordinated synergy between the media practitioners and auditors.
The experts at a two-day workshop on Audit Reporting, organized for journalists in Benin City by FrontFoot Media Initiative noted that the synergy will ensure that Nigerians have access to information on how their representatives use public funds entrusted in their care.
The media and financial experts are former managing director of New Age newspaper, Sully Abu, a former MD of Guardian Newspapers Limited, Emeka Izeze, former editor of ThisWeek and MD of City Tempo, Sonala Olumhense, and Chido Nwakanma, while the financial experts are Chief Chukwuemeka Joe-Nsika and Godswill Omenogor.
In their submissions the experts were unanimous that the synergy between the two professions will ensure that the executives of governments audit their financial account as when due at the end of every fiscal year and also make same available for the media for the purpose of reporting the same documents to the governed.
They argued that would ensure accountability and transparency in the management and expenditures of public funds thereby eliminating corruption and fraud in the financial system.
