ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES TO APPEAL RULING OF NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL COURT.

Despite the order of the National Industrial Court mandating it to suspend its ongoing strike action, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it will not immediately resume back to classrooms.

President of the union, Professor EMMANUEL OSODEKE while featuring on a monitored programme, noted that ASUU will consult with its legal team and its leadership structures, before deciding on the next step.

Professor OSODEKE also hinted that the union will challenge the ruling at the Court of Appeal and if possible, the Supreme Court.

Justice POLYCARP HAMMAN of the court had asked ASUU to discontinue its industrial action pending the hearing of the substantive suit filed by the federal government, over the ongoing strike action.

The Judge ruled that the industrial action is harmful to public university students who cannot afford to attend private tertiary institutions.

Speaking after the court hearing, the lawyer to the federal government JAMES IGWE and that of ASUU, EDOJE EDOH, expressed divergent views on the judgment.
