Minister of Education, ADAMU ADAMU has listed what he described as efforts by the Federal Government to resolve the strike action embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of Universities, which has entered day 206 today.
ADAMU, after a meeting with Pro-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of federal universities, says that the government had offered a 23.5 percent salary increase for all category of the workforce in Federal Universities, except for professors who will enjoy a 35% increase.
ADAMU ADAMU added that the government had also promised that a sum of 150 billion naira would be provided for in the 2023 Budget as funds for the revitalization of Federal Universities, to be disbursed to the Institutions in the First Quarter of the year.
Speaking further, the Minister said that the government pledged a sum of 50 billion naira that would be provided for in the 2023 Budget for the payment of outstanding areas of earned academic allowances, also to be paid in the First Quarter of the year.
However, ASUU rejected all the offers, describing them as inadequate to meet the respective demands needed to tackle the challenges confronting the university system.
The Minister noted that the government has done the best that they can, as they have done everything possible to end the strike, all to no avail.
ADAMU ADAMU, also identified the issue of ‘no work, no pay’ as a major obstacle in the negotiations, but insisted that they will uphold their stance on the matter.
